Dr Doom & Ironman Hybrid Mask

This project is especially close to our hearts here at DC Paint Solutions, with the upcoming Doctor Doom movie inspiring us to bring two iconic characters together in one unique creation. We reworked the electrics, added authentic metal bolts, and even updated the mask’s profile to take it to the next level. Now, let the show begin!

Materials & Tools List

Prep & Clean

We started by thoroughly cleaning all substrates before keying the surface; this can be done with scotch brite, mirlon cloth or light sandpaper. All dust and debris were removed with a tack cloth and degreaser.

Next, we stripped down the plastic components and replaced the original white LED eyes with green ones to stay true to the character’s design. The plastic required precise filing and reshaping to achieve the right fit – and the end result was spot on.

Ground Coat (Primer)

We applied a custom black high-build primer to seal the substrate, using just a single coat to avoid creating an overly thick layer. Once dry, we carefully etched in classic Doctor Doom detailing using a file and drilled countersunk holes to accommodate the metal bolts. With the shaping complete, we finished with a coat of black 2K filler primer to smooth out any minor imperfections and create a flawless base for the next stage.

Cosmetic Adaptation

To adjust the jaw profile, we first created a thin plastic template to guide the new shape. We built up the area beneath with layers of filler before carefully glueing the template in place. The jawline was then reshaped by sanding back the necessary areas to achieve the desired contour. Once we were satisfied with the profile, we reapplied the 2K filler primer to ensure a smooth, seamless finish.

Base & Top Coat

To bring the classic Doctor Doom look to life, we applied three different shades of 1K acrylic grey metallic paint, layering them to achieve depth and character. Once the colour scheme was finalised, we sealed and protected the base coat with a 2K pure matte clearcoat lacquer.

Top Tip: Only apply the clearcoat once all colour work is complete, as it’s much easier to clean and sand 1K paint compared to a hardened 2K base.

We applied two coats of the lacquer, allowing at least an hour between each application. The final coat was then left to fully cure over the next two days to ensure a tough, lasting finish.

Final Note

We were thrilled with how this project turned out and hope you enjoyed it too – just in time for the upcoming Fantastic Four film.
