In this project, we brought to life a helmet that all Marvel fans will be extremely familiar with. Of course, we’re talking about Captain America’s helmet. This iconic piece of comic and film history is characterised by patriotic shades of blue and countless grazes sustained in combat. It was an extremely fun piece to bring to life, so let’s take a look at how we did it:
Materials & Tools List
- Red Scotch Brite
- Masking Tape
- 2K Black Filler Primer
- Light Solid Blue Paint
- Medium Solid Blue Paint
- Metallic Paint
Method
As DC Paint Solutions projects go, this one was relatively straightforward! Having painted countless busts, frames, and artefacts in the past, we’re highly experienced in this kind of makeover. As is often the case, the first port of call was to key down the helmet with some Scotch Brite sandpaper. This preliminary step ensures the surface is smooth and ready for coating with maximum adhesion.
Once ready, we got stuck in with our 2K Black Filler Primer. This black base layer is essential for paint adhesion and adding depth to the final coats.
Big Marvel fans will know that the helmet in the original Captain America comics is a very different colour from the one we see in the movies. That’s why, to begin with, we coated the helmet with our Light Solid Blue RAL Spray Paint. However, after the first coat, we decided to pivot and go for a Medium Solid Blue Paint, more like Chris Evans’ famous helmet. Both of these paints were acrylic and provided bold colours that were perfect for this project.
Once this coat dried, we masked off the iconic ‘A’ on the front of the helmet and applied a silver base coat over it. Finally, we decided to add wear and damage to give the helmet a bit more character.
Top Tip: To create damage, get some mirlon cloth, spray the paint onto it and go around the edges. Run the cloth down the lines, and it will leave streak lines.
Final Results
This was a really fun and easy project to take on, made possible by the RAL Aerosol Spray Paint we provide at DC Paint Solutions. It’s a great starter project that anyone can take on at home.
